This whole sequence involving the mayor -whose name, incidentally, is Mayor Spotz- satirizes trash TV and politicians with hair-trigger tempers while at the same time being cute, zany stuff for kids of all ages, not a warmed over Doonesbury rip-off. I honestly think some of the comics out there (which I will not name out of professional respect) lay it on wayyyy too thick with politics these days. On a lighter note, the whole sequence with Mayor Spotz is also an homage to a very funny Get Fuzzy story arc where Bucky gets his own call-in home decorating show on a community access channel which has to display a “technical difficulties” sign when Bucky flips out over a caller’s question. Having Spotz be a Dalmation is also a subtle send up of 101 Dalmations. I thought it was high time we saw a Dalmation in something wildly off the wall, not sugary and cute. Come to think of it, though, Spotz could have gotten those Dalmations in that Disney film out of a jam one to three by attacking those trying to kidnap them!
